Angelina Jolie! That’s all I
heard when I told my friends I was getting a Thai tattoo and believe me I am
NOT copying her and I am not a shallow individual ho hum. I just love the aesthetic simplicity of the
Thai designs, some of which go back thousands of years - for instance, the nine
peaks, or, Gao Yord. The elegant beauty and strength of the Yant Suea, or tiger
tattoo. The mystic power and symbolism of the five lined Hah Taew, are just a
small selection of designs available. The question was not whether to have one,
but how many and where on my body and where should I go to have them done.
Fly Straight to Thailand for a Tattoo
Well, the idea of jumping on a
plane and flying straight to Thailand was appealing, but hey! come on, I’m a
realist and I know just how far my credit card will take me and it wasn't old
Siam. If I wanted a Thai tattoo I had to look a little nearer home. I have
always been drawn to men with tattoos but in real life I haven’t been out with
one but I look at Leonardo DiCaprio in The Beach and I though his body art was
totally attractive - wink! It made me think that if I had a Thai tattoo I’d be
a magnet for some male attention from other like-minded tattoo aficionados.
As you can tell I researched
all the meanings of the various Yak Sant designs and believe me there are many
and I wouldn’t want to be tested on them, but I particularly favoured the Sun
Symbol to begin with. It’s a small circle representing daylight and all the
creatures, human and animal, that exist under our sun. It was easy, I’m good
with pain, I love the look and I now have four Thai tattoos and no I don’t have
four boyfriends, but I actually can see I have found love from someone I met at
the tattoo parlour! We are perfectly matched and he is a follower of Buddhism
who is taking me on a journey which fingers crossed for us both, may actually
see us going to Thailand and seeing for ourselves how Sak Yant Thai tattoos
figure in that country.
